KTDC-Raindrops-Chennai
We were here the other night for dinner. A friend of ours spoke about this to us on his well almost surprise visit home and the husband decided that we must try it out soon. The friend was very neutral with his opinion on the place but the acronym KTDC-Kerala Tourism Development Corporation stirred a chord or two in our hearts especially when one lives far away from God's Own Country...Ok not so far away, a state away!
I think it is quite ideal for those looking for a nice place to stay within the radius of the city while on a mission to Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This is on the road side and a hop, skip and a jump away from the Main Apollo Hospital, Greams Road. Hence, ideal for those who are travelling for a surgery or treatment. I do not know how the place is as far as the lodging part is concerned...but we went there to try out their food.
Reasonably good ambiance but these chairs are indeed heavy to move around so as we shift seats for serving ourselves especially if we are having their buffet (vegetarian) you are bound to make noises with the chair. You can have the A La Carte experience as well. We decided to go in for the buffet which is Rs.250 per head (taxes extra)
That was the cream of vegetable soup.
Fresh salad
The chicken biriyani with its raitha as the accompaniment separately ordered as one of us didn't want the buffet was nice. We did order three non veg items separately-a beef, chicken and a fish dish. The picture below is the beef masala. The rest of the pictures I will upload shortly...am experiencing some lag in uploading the pics from my cell. So do watch out for this space for the updating on the other non veg.
We went there thinking that it would be a truly authentic Kerala experience but it did lack that. The menu for the buffet will be uploaded once I get all the remaining pics organized but was mainly to cater to those residing there. The tastes could have been upped a great deal.
My son felt that he was reliving his hostel mess food with the buffet. There wasn't anything WOW about the dishes on display. The dessert was some pineapple something...but it tasted like some pineapple ice. I think it serves the purpose...you come, you serve yourself, you eat and then leave for whatever business you have come in for.
All the three non veg dishes (which were between the range of Rs.180 and Rs. 280-) ordered separately to go with the veg buffet were decent but not authentic in flavour. My kids do not usually behave critically and always try to find the goodness in a person or place whenever we meet someone for or got out to eat...so value for money, I doubt so. I guess they may not have a true Malayali cook (Perhaps, a North Indian cook? as is seen these days in some of the kitchens in Kerala) who understands the flavours or we just had a very bad hair day experience!
We are happy that KTDC set this up for the many Malayalis visiting. There is ample car parking space.
Uploading the remaining pics :-
I firmly believe this is subject to change.
Chicken 65-Quite good but lacked that authentic Kerala touch.
A huge Thumbs Up to that!
It did not live up to the expectation. Those were pathetic slices!
