Junior Kuppanna, T-nagar

This place is a favourite with my older one. Heard about this place first through a couple of foodie friends who love this place. Infact they were quite surprised that I hadn't tried it at all back then. At length, we did go there, but despite the spacious ambiance, the proximity to my home and the undivided attention one gets once at the table allotted to you...I do not like to be waited upon the way they do...it is sad to see the waiters go out of their way attending each table allotted to them.

For every morsel that goes into our mouths once served, the waiters will enquire whether it was good, spicy, tasty...that is not an enjoyable experience at all! Their eyes are literally feasting on our likes and dislikes. I do wonder if it is a training given to them.

I feel bad, I do not like them to be this servile!

I do not like being watched on while I eat. I am extremely shy and conscious in that way...I may blab all I want here in this space of mine but face to face I am extremely shy amongst strangers and online friends. The waiters here take off a bowl or a piece of cutlery the moment you are done with...so with their hawk eyesight they are watch us keenly. In my opinion that makes me very uncomfortable! I have had this experience several times.

Anyway, dinner was here the other day as sonny wanted to taste food from Junior Kuppanna located at Kannaiha Street, North Usman Road, T-Nagar, Chennai.

We started with the Aattu Kaal Soup. That piece is not meant for consuming, but the richness of the bones makes this a tasty and  appetizing soup quencher. It came in piping hot, spicy and peppery. If one has a cold or is sick, this soup is ideal for them. It was not apt for the weather and it was indeed a wrong order for this summer. Fortunately we shared it amongst the three of us!
The above is the boneless chilly chicken ordered which cost around (Rs.195/-) Tasty indeed! Almost like popping popcorn into your mouths. it disappears in no time leaving us craving for more. The picture below is the Mutton Kaima that cost Rs. 205/- It was truly melt in the mouth, very well seasoned and prepared with utmost care. We enjoyed the dish.

The waiter recommended the above dish which is the Kari Dosa or the mutton dosa. It looked yumm and that's what the husband had along with two chutneys and other accompanying sides-a salad and a non veg/veg gravy. I think it has an egg poured over it, cooked and flipped. Interesting combo! I do prepare egg dosas at home but this mix was interesting.

My son ordered a Kothu Paratha which is his all time favourite. He always orders this without trying out any other new stuff on their menu. It is extremely filling. I didn't get a good picture hence not sharing it here...it ended up as a very hazy picture!

I had an Uthappam-Erode uthappam...I pictured it to be some fancy dish but it looked quite plain. I didn't feel like capturing it and did regret ordering it. It looked like a flat hopper/appom. That name misled me.

We brought back some Biriyani and a curry for the younger one as he couldn't accompany us. He had just returned from a movie and had a very late lunch with his friends.
Overall our bill set us back by Rs.1600 plus along with a soft drink or two.

The place is ideally located for us as it is quite close to our home. Parking is in the residential area in front of the hotel and one is lucky if one gets space. There is no valet parking. Many people were queuing in front for the takeaways!
It is expensive but the food is tasty, service is quick and very in your face. Refills of accompanying gravies and salads were given if asked.

Value for money-Well perhaps if they struck off fifty bucks from each dish then I think it would make a bit more sense. Nevertheless, this is a lovely place especially if you are a hard core non vegetarian!

Would I go there again?-Indeed!!! There will be an encore whenever the family feels like eating from JK . As we go up or down the stairs we can have a glimpse of their very neat kitchen. The chefs have their hair tucked well under those caps.
