Kitchen Bloopers

Today I must admit, I committed a grave atrocity in the kitchen and would like to admit my folly and laughed a great deal at myself as well...I  knew something was wrong but got too carried away with documenting that I falied to reason out with the obvious vegetable in front of me...

What a waste...but then, this blog is not just about the stuff I create in the kitchen and beautify with the clicks I take, but it is also about relating with one and all that I am humanas well and do commit errors...so to all you wonderful chefs, readers...here is one of my kitchen bloopers...

As you can clearly see from the pics, that I got myself a decent banana flower/Banana blossom/Koombhu to make myself this wonderful dish. I pulled out each purple bract and within each there were these white inch like florets as seen just above, pulled them out as well...now here is the blooper, I was supposed to remove the sepal or the stringy thing which is embedded in these florets and dispose them and then chop the above florets devoid of that...Guess what I did, I made the dish with what I had to dispose and threw the stuff I had to make the dish with...I knew something was wrong...from such huge banana flower, I wondered which part I didn't understand when I used to watch my mother-in-law cook this. I have only eaten this when she has made it for me perhaps twice...and I guess I watched her make it without paying heed to the intricate details...I am not ashamed to admit that, there can be boring and yawining moments in the kitchen as well!

So these were the strands that were supposed to be disposed, which I understood had to be placed in some buttermilk to prevent it from discolouring, I did that...but I had to actually chop those white inch size florets and put them in buttermilk.. So as I felt it was not enough to make a dish, I added some corn kernels and fresh peas and made a nice poriyal/thoran with little grated coconut, salt, cumin seeds, turmeric powder...all in a skillet with spluttered mustard seeds.(I did remove those florets from the buttermilk and added it along...just that it wasn't the florets that I used, but the stringy strands which were to be disposed)

This was the result! Got a perfect, tasty dish! but please remember readers what actually had to be used was not used. Hope I brought a smile to your face, I definitely will make another dish with the same veggie and will update this post with the right dish, in the mean time, have fun, our kitchen is like a lab , we must explore all possibilities and experiment and don't shy away even if it is a blooper!

Somebody did complain that the dish was a bit too stringy and he felt that his mother's version was certainly different...I just quietly agreed.Shucks guys, but got a perfect click :) take care!
