Hello Dollies-My Magic Bars-Your Fantasy

And that's Louis Armstrong with his Hello Dolly :) How tastefully sung! Love his unique voice!
My dish has nothing much to do with his song but definitely it could be a lovely backdrop as you scroll through the recipe. Perhaps the only similarity would be probably the same era in which the following dessert came about post the discovery of our very versatile Condensed milk.
I had done this last year for a friend on the occasion of the birthday. It's also called Magic Bars as you literally create magic and fantasy with the layers. It is a pan-cookie recipe. I will be uploading the video shortly of the finale on Instagram.
As crazy as the layers one adds to these bars, it's insanely delicious! It's like you get drunk on a slab of guilt(read sugar) and have no qualms about it the next day.
So let's start at the very beginning a very good way to start :) by bashing up a few graham crackers or Marie biscuits and breaking them down into bits or chunks or powder!!! you may even roughly pulse them. I took a cup and a half of these cookie crumbs, added half a cup of melted butter to it and allowed the duo to merge well with my fingers or in the food processor.
Once these came together I laid it on my baking pan/disposable pans and then started on the second layer which of course is any chocolate chips of choice. Be generous, you may use two cups of an assortment of chocolate chips.
You may use the bottom of a tumbler to smoothen the layer. This crust is extremely important and has to be done well as this forms the base of the bar and helps us to hold all those precious jewels layered on top of it.
Once the Choco chips have been laid out, I had some left-over chocolate sticks ( I save these for lil kids who come home tagging along with their parents ) at home, I added that as well to create another texture, dimension and some drama while biting into it. This is optional!
The Choco chips is followed by another layer which as is obvious from the picture is unsweetened desiccated coconut (One cup or more). Oh boy! Does it get any better than a chocolate and coconut combo?
My next layer was a mixture of nuts (use a cup of that) that I had at home. I was stingy with what I had as I had another recipe up my sleeve but please fill the entire space with an assortment of chopped nuts-preferably pecans or almonds. I added some cranberries as well. The layers are interchangeable-you may have the desiccated coconut followed by the nuts or vice-versa! There are no hard and fast rules here. This Dolly is your fantasy to doll up!
Crust-Choco chips-Desiccated Coconut-Nuts-Condensed milk...Now that my friend is Pure Comatose!!! That heroine-villain call her whatever you want...That last addition now that is gonna catapult this whole dessert to the next level.
Yaaah! Condensed Milk-just drizzle that all over the dessert, be liberal and irrational at this point! No thoughts about the gym, your love handles, your sagging loose jaw, the waistline...No No...just close your eyes and sign that dotted line-A One way ticket to Hell-your guilt-free trip!
Once the condensed milk is poured over, it goes into a preheated oven 180 degrees until the chocolate melts, the crust firms and the aroma of toasted coconut fills the room. You may use a parchment paper for this bake and leave some overhang such that once the bake is done, it is easy for you to lift the bake from the pan using that overhang and then allow it to cool before you slice through.
These bars may be neatly cut and refrigerated /frozen and thawed before use. A fun-filled activity that can be done as a group especially with little kids who would enjoy all the drama and the lovely layers.
If done to perfection, they make pretty gifts and very presentable layers for photographs! Oh well, as I was stingy and inconsistent with the ingredients, my layers weren't perfect for the photographs. But trust me I did not compromise on its taste.
Go Bake these Dollies!
