Two Peas In A Pod
As the summer makes its exit slowly where I live, I also have to bid adieu to my boys as they make their transition from home to college and back to their busy lives as boarders. Expecting some showers this evening...Yes, the skies have broken down in depression as well! Am going to let them wail...Hasta Manana, until we meet again! Don't hold back your tears...

To me the boys are like two peas in a pod. I had them one after the other without any planning or forethought. Infact I carried my younger imp close to a trimester and then realized after a few medical check-ups that he was happily playing truant in my womb. The sheer knowledge that a little seed has sprouted within me sent jitters all over my body back then. Both the husband and I were scared, We were not mentally and financially prepared for another baby...But we could only move forward as he had already taken shape and was already making his presence felt.
My life revolves a great deal around them. Even now, I constantly monitor them giving them ample space to grow away from my shadow. They are young men in their twenties reaching out for sunlight and doing their thing as individuals.
The younger one is still my drama queen and I love him too much for that as he is the miniature version of my husband. He adds the music and drama to our otherwise mundane life...he constantly questions me, critiques me, smothers me with hugs and kisses and literally raids the bakes at home.
My older pea is like The Enlightened One! Full of rationale and responsibilities! These beautiful moments have been captured by the husband. Whenever the lil one was resting on his mat or play sheet on the floor, the older one would hover over him and talk sweet lil nothings to him, would role-play and all that Jazz! I have so many beautiful moments of theirs captured like so.
I could go on talking about my boys as do most parents...but let me take a detour and head to the recipe instead. In the following recipe I have used two versions of the peas. The sprouted version and the frozen peas. The recipe is quite simple to follow as well. I have made a simple poriyal/thoran/coconut based stir-fry with both the peas.
Oh I must admit, I didn't feed the boys with this. They hate peas!!! I have to hide it in some stuffed roti, sandwich or a cutlet for them to have these.
In a sauce pan in a tbsp. of oil, allow a tsp. of mustard seeds to crackle. Once that crackles, add in cumin seeds and broken, dry chillies. To this add a finely chopped onion and let it brown. Add the sprouted peas (you can make your own or buy the store-bought ones) a handful of coconut which has been pulsed lightly with a tsp. of turmeric, cumin seeds, two pods of garlic and added to the browned onions. Stir the entire mix well-the onions, the pulsed coconut and the sprouted peas. Add a dash of water and cover with a lid so that the peas cook through well! After five to eight minutes, remove the lid and let it cook without the lid, add adequate salt and the thawed frozen peas.
This cooks rapidly soon after. Stir and combine them well. Add fresh curry leaves as a garnish. The dish is done. If you want it a bit spicy do add any favourite spice masala or chilly powder. I added a tsp. of meat masala (Eastern) along with the dish and combine it well!
Very healthy and filling and packed with proteins.
