Sabha Canteen-Vani Mahal
The music festival always beckons the husband more than it does me...I am very selective about the performer and am such a choosy person despite the fact that all are stalwarts who come to perform and entertain us.
And as is customary during this time, many of the snack/tiffin centres within such venues are open to both the rasikas (audience/music aficionados) and the public. We did manage to catch a bite recently.
This place is located within Vani Mahal adjacent to the new Pothys that has opened on G. N Chetty Road, T-Nagar, Chennai. There is a lot of glitter and glamour all around and as one walks across the road itself, the lights, colours and the colourfully decked(in their new saris) and dressed Mamis with jasmine flowers tucked around their hair buns makes the street festive!
The December chill in Chennai also reminds one that the year is almost winding down and one or two festive moments to look forward to with rich fruit cakes, merry making and festive cheer.
The husband and I managed to sneak into this canteen and went in for a light bite as we weren't too hungry but being the foodie that I am...he wanted me to go and experience it with him.
Totally abuzz with the rasikas, there's a lot of chatter and food making its way through such tables scattered around for us to come, sit, eat, pay and leave. It was an odd feeling...I don't know why...maybe because I felt stupid taking pics of serious people grabbing a quick bite and busy bodies serving everybody but people were kind and did move away from my frame...(pics taken on my cell phone, lousy I know!)
Sambhar vada, a plain dosa and mini idlis swimming in sambhar-total bill scrawled on a piece of paper-Rs. 150/- so I am assuming each item was fifty bucks. It was not a great experience but it wasn't a bad one either. Food was quick and served with a smile. As we get up, our chairs are filled in with more rasikas.
Taste wise-hmmmmmm...served the purpose of having a quick bite but not a "WOW" moment at all! It was simple and matter of fact cooking...serve, eat and go about your business...one must be careful with the salt content...our sambhar was salty!!!
Thank you for the music! Thank you for the food! Grateful to be alive to enjoy such experiences. Thank you for family and genuine friends!
