Mutton Pirattiyathu with Butterfruit Salad
Sooooooooooon...watch out for this space/post, I'll be back in a couple of hours :)
They say a picture speaks so much...am almost in a sepia tone and mood.
Pa and Non-veg went hand in hand almost doing a Tra La La frolick, he couldn't understand a vegetarian meal. When it came to food, he would always splurge! we always had in abundance!
Boiled and kept aside a handful of baby potatoes.
Got some frozen mutton the other day...pathetic ones, loads of bones with not much flesh on it :(, anyway, I managed to dice them further so that it would cook faster in my pressure cooker. Washed the meat well, rubbed in some lemon over it and then massaged in cumin powder, fennel powder and pepper powder. Kept this coated for an hour in the fridge.
Then allowed it to cook in a heavy-bottomed vessel over a medium heat till the juices started to accumulate, added sufficient water and let it cook for a while more.
In my pressure cooker, drizzled in some coconut oil and let a tsp of mustard crackle, threw in some sliced onions and fresh ginger-garlic paste and let it brown, then in went the turmeric and the sliced chunky tomatoes and split green chillies. Cooked it till it got nice and mushy, drizzled in some apple cider vinegar perhaps a tbsp, added adequate salt keeping in tune to the amount of meat being utilised and the best part was adding in the Eastern Mutton Masala.
Nice tosses and turns with my spatula and in went the half cooked mutton merging with the coconut oil. The waft in the air...Pa would you come down just once more to spend some quality time with me? You, me and mutton purattiyathu? :( Oh!how I selfishly wish this was possible! just to turn back the clock and cheat with death!)
I let the meat cook in the pressure cooker for more than fifteen whistles if my Maths was right? was too distracted with the FM playing in the backdrop...the music did drown the sounds of the whistles but did not mask the waft of he Kerala spices emanating from the cooker, once I opened the lid, checked if the meat was cooked and it was!
Made friends with the baby potatoes at this juncture and meat and carbs ...all seemed like one big happy family in my pressure cooker!
I let it cook for a while more, added in two tsps of Kashmiri Chilly powder...sonny took a peak and said it wasn't red enough! Now he asked for it...I am gonna give him red...Well you can call it brownish- red or vice-versa. Taste seemed good, a few curry leaves thrown in and mint to add/enhance the flavour and appearance and waited till the dish got the coating I foresaw. Drizzled in a tsp of coconut oil and waited till it sort of reduced in volume, thickened in its own juices and spices.
Squeezed in half a lemon to add that Zinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng! :) I have posted mutton recipes earlier.
With Rotis and an avocado salad...salad to be updated tomorrow...Zzzz!

Yup, priceless my Tall, Dark and Handsome father carrying me back in the seventies on our terrace while my mother who is also no more was probably hanging clothes or picking up the clothes from the clothes' line.
